This one of the most intriguing and helpful ideas I came across since a long time. A plant that is genetically modified to detect land mines.

Danish BioTech company Aresa Biodetection has genetically modified weed which has been coded to change color when its roots come in contact with nitrogen-dioxide (NO2) evaporating from explosives buried in soil. - VERY COOL!
First tests start this year.

Currently land mines are mostly removed by putting a stick into the ground to locate the mine, then removing it and detonating it. Dogs and metal detectors are also often used. Which of course is extremly dangerous.

Report first seen on slashdot. Yahoo News has the full story with more details.
