Philips electronics is celebrating a birthday, tomorrow marks the 25th anniversary of the CD. Philips says that over 200 billion CDs have sold in the last 25 years. It’s hard to imagine what life would be like without the ubiquitous CD.

From games to music everything techy seems to have used the media at some point. The Philips factory that pressed the world’s first CD belonged to Polygram recording company, which was owned by Philips at the time.

The first CD to be made at the plant was “The Visitors” by ABBA and by the time CDs hit the market in 1982 a catalog of around 150 titles was available, though most of them were of classical music. The first CD players from Philips were produced in Japan in November of 1982 and were introduces in the U.S. in March of 1983.
