AT&T Laywers start to act on iPhone Unlocking Software

Several groups have now said that they have software ready that robustly unlocks the Apple iPhone and enables users to use the iPhone on other carriers. One of these groups has apparently (there are some doubts, as lawyers like to send written things first) got a call from AT&T lawyers reports Engadget.
This is becoming a very interesting development. First I am a bit surprised that AT&T got involved first and not Apple. Considering the revenue share deals Apple is supposed to have made with European carriers, unlocked iPhones would put Apple in a weak position.
If users can just unlock the iPhone with a simple software than the carriers loose their exclusivity and Apple would make less money.
I cannot imagine Apple not caring about this situation. This week might be a hot one on this topic, as it is expected that the European iPhone deals will be announced at the IFA 2007 in Berlin, which starts on August 31st.
