SanDisk announced today that they have devised a new uSSD 5000 solid state drive aimed at low cost PCs in the under $250 range. SanDisk says that the first computer to use the drive will be the Intel-powered classmate PC for educational use in emerging nations.

The uSSD is a USB module that is designed to be embedded onto the motherboard of a PC and will be capable of supporting operating systems like Windows XP Pro, XP Embedded, Windows CE, and Linux.

SanDisk expects to make the uSSD drives in capacities of 1 to 8GB. This is also the first SanDisk SSD product to use the new patented multi-level cell (MLC) technology allows the storage of twice the data in the same physical space as the single-level cell tech.
