Intel has launched the first industry-standard quad core processors for high –end multi processor servers. The new CPUs are designed specifically for use in multi-processor servers and fall under the new quad core Xeon 7300 series processor family.

Intel promises more than twice the performance per watt over the previous generation of dual core processors. Processors included in the family are up to 2.93 GHz at 130-watts. The Xeon 7300 family also includes processors that use 80-watts or 50-watts intended for use in blade servers or high density rack systems at a 1.86GHz frequency.

To go along with more cores, the new processors also have up to four times the memory of previous processors. Pricing for the new processors will vary but will run from $856 to $2301 in quantities of 1000.

Intel Xeon-based multi-processor servers are the backbone of the enterprise," said Tom Kilroy, Intel vice president and co-general manager of the Digital Enterprise Group. "With the Xeon 7300 series, Intel is delivering new levels of performance and performance per watt, and driving the Intel Core microarchitecture into such innovative systems as four-socket, 16-core blades that use less energy than our older models. It's simply amazing."
