Maxell announced today that they now have 8cm Blu-ray media available for use in HD camcorders, like the one from Hitachi we wrote about before. The BD-R and BD-RE discs are compatible with the latest camcorders on the market.

The discs can hold 7.5GB of data, equating to one hour of full HD 1920 x 1080 video per disc. The discs will be available starting in September, coinciding with the launch of the Hitachi camcorder for a whopping $24.99 for a single sided BD-R disc and $34.99 for the BD-RW. That's one heck of a reason to NOT buy the Hitachi camcorder.

"The market for HD content has significant upside, and we believe that as people see their home movies with richer texture, images and sound as a result of HD technologies available on the market, they won't turn back," said Don Patrican, vice president of sales and marketing for Maxell Corporation of America.
