TORONTO (Hollywood Reporter) - "Superman Returns" star Kate Bosworth will play the title role in a feature adaptation of the best-selling novel "Veronika Decides to Die."

The actress will play a woman who wakes up in a mental institution after a failed suicide attempt. She discovers that she has a weakened heart and only days to live. The film follows her recovery as she finds true love and a newfound will to survive.

British filmmaker Emily Young ("Kiss Of Life") will direct the independently produced project from an adaptation of Brazilian novelist Paulo Coelho's book, which has sold more than 9 million copies. Principal photography begins this winter in New York.

Bosworth stars opposite Sigourney Weaver in the drama "The Girl in the Park," which premiered Sunday at the Toronto International Film Festival. She played Lois Lane in the 2006 film "Superman Returns." She will reunite with that film's villain, Kevin Spacey, in the upcoming "21." The two previously worked together in "Beyond the Sea."
