There is something more than a little disturbing about this to me. Motion Portrait takes a still photo and gives it a creepy 3D motion and sound capability. The Japanese technology takes a normal still image them turns it into a 3D talking head that can be placed into other applications.
The company says the tech is ideal for video games and forum avatars. The technology will also be offered to other companies for use in their own products. Looks like a good update to the Wii Mii, albeit a somewhat spooky one.
The face can be synced to sound and respond to some input as well. MotionPortrait has some demos on its website. The creepy little smiling dog is weird. Supposedly, all you need to render the real-time animation is a 1GHz CPU and animations can be viewed on some cell phones as well.
