After years of discussions the Transrapid high-speed train for connecting Munich and its airport project got the official go today.
The 37km (~23miles) magnetic rail passage is supposed to cost 1.85 billion Euro (~$2.6 billion).
Currently it takes about an hour to get from the Munich city center to the airport, because the train is stopping at a lot of small stations along the way. The German maglev can reach 310mph and would reach the airport in about 10min.
Just imagine you land at the Munich airport and 15min. later you sit in a tent at the Oktoberfest and drink your first Mass beer - the future looks very bright indeed.
There are actually already Transrapid projects underway in the United States. See this report.
Via Sueddeutsche Zeitung (German).
By the way the Oktoberfest, the largest beerfest on the planet is underway now. You still have time until October 7th to join the party.
