Broadcom says its new VideoCore 3 solution shatters three mobile multimedia records for HD Video, 12-megapixel camera, and 3D gaming in one device. Broadcom has announced it is sampling the industries first low power multimedia processor that enables HD video camcorder and playback in cell phones and multimedia devices.

The new processor is called the Broadcom VideoCore III multimedia processor and Broadcom says the processor can display full size, full resolution HD video on external HDTV displays. Broadcom also says that the new processor requires power levels similar to that of existing processors, so battery life will be similar to what we see today.

"Mobile handsets with compelling multimedia features are capturing the imagination of consumers and phone developers alike, driving the industry to push the limits of what a handset can do," said Will Strauss, Principal Analyst from Forward Concepts. "Enabling HD quality video without draining the battery will provide another leap forward for mobile devices, taking high definition multimedia from novelty to must-have feature."

Broadcom says samples of the BCM2727 processor with VideoCore III mobile multimedia technology are available not to early access customer with pricing undisclosed at the time. No handsets have been announced utilizing the new processor at the time of writing.
