A NASA funded research project at the University of California, Los Angeles developed the first micromachine powered by live muscle tissue. The silicon microrobot is just half the width of a human hair. The muscle tissue used is from a rat's heart.
NASA hopes swarms of crawling "musclebots" could one day help maintain spacecraft by fixing holes made by micrometeorites.
Carlos Montemagno team at UCLA breakthrough is to have developed an automated way of anchoring muscle tissue to a substance like silicon.
