Vonage & Verizon Settle Patent Suit

The long running lawsuit between Verizon and Vonage has been resolved. The suit originated over Verizon alleging Vonage had illegally used several Verizon patents in its VOIP phone service.

Vonage has always maintained that it had not used Verizon technology in its services. In March of 2007, a jury found that Vonage had infringed on three Verizon patents and awarded Verizon $58 million in damages.

In September 2007, the U.S. Court of Appeals upheld the decision on infringement and Vonage filed an appeal, which is still pending. Vonage and Verizon announced today that an agreement has been reached. The terms of the agreement stipulate that if the rehearing on the two patents in the case is won by Vonage it will pay Verizon $80 million. If Vonage loses the rehearing on either patent, it will pay Verizon $117.5 million. This should mean that either way the cookie crumbles Vonage will still be in business.
