Posted on Fri, 26 Oct 2007 12:52:46 CDT | by Shane McGlaunThe Sony PlayStation 2 turns seven today with more than 120 million consoles sold worldwide. The PS2 was released in North America on October 26, 2000 and has not only moved 120 million systems, but has sold over 1 billion pieces of software to date.
"While today's anniversary celebrates PlayStation 2's past, we're very excited for its future," said Jack Tretton, President and Chief Executive Officer for SCEA. "We look forward to the platform's continued growth and expect to sell approximately 12 million units worldwide by the end of March, leading us to anticipate that PlayStation 2's lifecycle will exceed that of the original PlayStation(R). Never before has an in-home game system experienced this type of worldwide success on such a long-lasting scale."
Sony says it is committed to a 10-year life cycle for its PS2 and from the sound of it; the PS2 might be around for even longer. The PS2 also had an impact on the DVD market by driving the adoption of the DVD format by its capability to play DVD movies. This is the same thing Sony hopes to accomplish with Blu-ray and its PS3 console. A limited edition ceramic white PS2 (available on Amazon.com now) will be available this holiday season with two USB mics for $149.99.
