The OLPC association announced today that it won the bidding to provide 100,000 XO laptops to Uruguay. The contract calls for up to 400,000 XP laptops. Interestingly, the OLPC announced not long ago that production was delayed on the XO notebook, leading many to wonder if the XO would be available in time to fill orders.
OLPC announced a program for the holidays where buyers in the U.S. can purchase a XO laptop for themselves and give one to a child in another country for $399. The XO laptops are expected to be available on November 12 with the Give 1 Get 1 sale lasting only two weeks.
The OLPC won this bid to provide the laptops for the CEIBAL Project. "We are very much looking forward to the next phase of the CEIBAL Project and to bringing highly innovative education and an equal access tool to all school children in Uruguay," said Miguel Brechner, President of LATU. "The XO laptop's advanced features and functionality - including the out-of-the box mesh network, integrated camera and dual-mode display - are certain to delight the children of Uruguay and to kindle in them a deep passion for learning, creativity and self-expression."
