HP announced new workstations today called the HP xw6600 and the HP xw8600. Both of these new workstations are powered by either dual quad-core Intel Xeon processors or dual dual-core processors.
"Our eight-core HP machine goes beyond what I thought was capable in a workstation," said Jason Pohl, senior designer, Orange County Choppers, a maker of unique, custom-designed high-performance motorcycles based in Orange County, N.Y. "Simultaneously, I can do five SolidWorks designs, several large Photoshop documents, render 3D studio max 900,000 polygon models with textures, run Outlook, and access several websites while streaming music and video. One more thing: It doesn't miss a beat!"
The processors used in the systems are either Intel Xenon 5400 quad-core CPUs or Intel Xenon 5200 series dual-core processors. Ram capacity in the xw8600 is up to 128GB and up to 5TB of storage capacity is available. The workstations are available in either desk-side tower cases or rack mount enclosures. The workstations support dual PCI Express x16 graphics cards and will be available starting in December from $1200.
