Nintendo is serving notices to shops that sell mod chips for the Wii console in Germany.
Nintendo wants the shops to disclose who manufactured the Wii modding chips and destroy the inventory of modded Wii consoles.
Wii modding chips circumvent copy protection and add several other features.
The Wiinja mod chip for instance adds: Non Swap / Direct Boot, Boots Own Region WII Backups Directly, Boots Own Region Gamecube Backups Directly, Boots Imports Gamecube Backups by SWAP, D2B Drive Support and Improved Read Method, Includes AudioFix, MultiDisc/MultiGames, Support DVD-R and DVD+R (Burn +R on DVDROM Booktype), Universal EUROPE/USA/JAPAN Wii Console Supported and Stealth Mode to the Wii console.
In August U.S. Customs raided more than 30 homes, businesses and shops in 16 U.S. States to clamp down on the sale of mod chips for video game consoles.
