The LEGO Brick is celebrating its 50th birthday.
The LEGO brick in its present form was launched in 1958. The interlocking principle with its tubes makes it unique, and offers unlimited building possibilities.
Almost everybody I know played with LEGOs as a kid. I also know people who are beyond 30 and still play with LEGO bricks.
The LEGO brick influenced the way a huge group of people think and how their brains are wired when they grew up.
LEGO is celebrating the 50th birthday with 100 new items in their shop and several events, competitions world-wide.
The LEGO history began back in 1932 in Denmark, when Ole Kirk Christansen founded a small factory for wooden toys in the unknown town of Billund in the south of the country. The name LEGO is a fusion of the Danish words "LEg" and "GOdt" ("play well"). 15 years after the founding Christiansen discovered plastic as the ideal material for toy production, and bought the first injection molding machine in Denmark. In 1949 he developed the first LEGO brick prototype. In January of 1958 the design we know today was introduced.
Production of LEGO bricks with Acrylonitrile Butadine Styrene (ABS) began in 1963.
LEGO bricks are produced in special plants in Denmark, the Czech Republic, and Mexico.
