Sony released the Sony PSP firmware 3.90 with Skype support in the United States and Europe. As reported Sony delayed Skype for the Sony PSP in Japan.

The firmware 3.90 will enable all owners of the new slim Sony PSP (PSP 2000 series) to make and receive phone calls. Skype will not work with the first generation of the Sony PSP (PSP 1000).
Apparently there are specific hardware differences in the memory area that make it impossible to run Skype on the old Sony PSP consoles.

With the addition of the Skype functions you can also send and receive voicemail to over 200 million Skype users worldwide. To use Skype on the Sony PSP you simply need to upgrade to system software 3.90, register on Skype and talk, using a headset and remote control.

Also added through firmware 3.90 is the Go!Messenger icon. Go!Messenger (works on all PSP consoles, with the ability for video and voice chat, as well as numerous other features will be available at the end of February, and the presence of the icon not only emphasizes its impending arrival but also allows users to obtain more information about the feature from a dedicated website, accessed via clicking on the icon. More information about the release of Go!Messenger will be announced soon.
See this video on Playstation.Blog that features John Koller, senior marketing manager for PSP, demonstrating on how to get started with Skype on the Sony PSP.
