SanDisk announced today that it was bringing the new iNAND 16GB embedded flash drive to market for mobile handsets. SanDisk says the dive is based on Advanced MLC NAND flash technology and will provide high storage capacity for next generation handsets.
The new iNAND has a 12x16mm package for the 16GB of storage space. “As more and more applications and multimedia capabilities converge within sleeker mobile handsets, the need for high-capacity mobile storage increases substantially from year to year," said Dan Inbar, vice president and general manager of the Mobile Handset Vendors division at SanDisk. "The new 16GB iNAND is the ideal solution for accommodating mobile applications, operating system programs and premium content such as large quantities of music, photos and video. Featuring a standard package interface, the 16GB iNAND EFD is designed to be quickly integrated into various handset designs for both storage capacity scalability and a smooth migration to future products and functionalities, such as system boot."
The 16GB iNAND is now sampling to mobile handset makers. SanDisk says it expects to double the storage capacity again to 32GB in 2008. There is no word at this time on handsets that will use the new 16GB iNAND.
