Verizon Wireless says it will be placing a pair if its high tech COWs (Cells On Wheels) outside the Daytona International Speedway to boost wireless coverage for Verizon customers enjoying the race. Each of the COWs has a 75-foot antenna with 10 dedicated voice channels and two high-speed data channels.
Verizon says it expects million of successful connections per hour on its digital network in Florida during the weeklong event. "Rolling in these COWs allows us to turbo-charge our network right where and when we need it," said Frank Wise, network director for Verizon Wireless. "It's all part of a year-round effort and investment to provide the most advanced and reliable wireless network and services to our Florida customers."
Verizon says at the height of the Daytona 500 week the audience will total about 200,000 fans on the 480 acre motorsports complex. The COWs can handle Verizon’s Rev A EVDO service with download speeds up to 1.4 Mbps.
