Hitachi launched a new notebook 2.5-inch hard drive today called the Travelstar 5K320 with 320Gb of storage space. The drive spins at 5400 rpm and the new drive can be had with an optional feature supporting Bulk Data Encryption.
The Drive uses the SATA 3Gb/s interface and perpendicular magnetic recording technology. Power consumption is optimized to improve battery life and the drive only consumes 1.8w of power when reading and writing and .55W when idle.
Hitachi says the drive also has an industry leading ability to withstand 400G of operating shock. "The Travelstar 5K320 addresses a growing demand for high capacity hard drives, which are at the heart of today's notebook PCs, external storage devices, gaming consoles and other mobile computing applications," said Larry Swezey, director, Consumer and Commercial HDD, Hitachi Global Storage Technologies. "And when coupled with our optional Bulk Data Encryption technology, the Travelstar 5K320 offers even greater value to notebook users by helping to guard against data theft." The drive is available now.
