A new report from MultiMedia Intelligence says that Blu-ray players will be the highest volume consumer devices that are Internet-enabled by 2012. The end of the format war that resulted in Blu-ray being the new HD format standard is expected to drive this market.
According to the report total shipments of Internet enabled electronic devices in 2007 hit 64 million units. The report says that Internet connected Blu-ray players will hit 50 million units along by 2012. The majority of the devices will use wireless connectivity over wired the report says as well.
"The end of the format war between Blu-Ray and HD-DVD promises to accelerate shipment volume of Blu-Ray DVD equipment," according to Mark Kirstein, President of MultiMedia Intelligence. "As a result, Blu-Ray DVD equipment could become the largest volume segment of IP-Enabled Consumer devices even sooner than 2012."
