Insight Research says that IPTV, Streaming Movie and Music will be worth $70 billion over the next six years. This amount would be derived from services streaming media on demand or in real-time and would prohibit users from local storage of the media.
"The outlook for streaming media has never been brighter. Questions surrounding consumers' willingness to pay for content have been dispelled by satellite radio and iTunes," says Robert Rosenberg, Insight Research president. "The forecasts that we present are conservative and in line with current performance. If, however, per-stream costs drop faster than anticipated, we have quicker acceptance of IPTV, or improvements in 3G delivery take place faster than expected, it could blow the doors off of our forecasts, propelling this industry into explosive growth," Rosenberg continues.
Insight bases the claims on four market drivers including license issues, broadband access, mass market demand and enterprise usage. It will probably be safe to say that the recently closed FCC auctions for the 700MHz spectrum will help these services reach the projected amounts if broadband becomes more readily available for consumers.
