For police officers and security guards around the world as well as consumers looking for a quality flashlight, SureFire is the brand of choice. SureFire has announced that the use of poorly made off-brand and foreign import lithium ion batteries in its flashlights can lead to exploding, venting, or fire.

Surefire stops short of saying that one of its flashlights was involved in a fire resulting from poorly made batteries. However it does say that on March 1st, 2008 an on-duty police officer had his flashlight catch fire while on his belt. The cause of the fire was found to be the battery.

SureFire says that consumers should be very wary of using foreign made lithium 123A batteries, especially those marked PRC or Made in China. Naturally SureFire recommends its own USA made 123A batteries.
