The One Laptop per Child foundation announced today that it has appointed a new COO. Charles Kane was appointed COO and President by founder and Chairman Nicholas Negroponte. The OLPC has had a rough time of late with key players in the foundation leaving to start their own companies.

The OLPC was founded with the goal of creating a $100 laptop that would enable children in third world countries to get a better education. Peru placed one of the first orders for the laptops, which wound up costing in the area of $188 per unit rather than the $100 first talked about.

"Now that global distribution deployment are underway, OLPC needs a leader with strong operational experience to ensure that the organization delivers on its commitments to numerous partners and governments," said Nicholas Negroponte, Founder and Chairman of One Laptop per Child. "During the past year Chuck has generously helped out on a part-time basis and his counsel has been invaluable. We're delighted that he can now join us on a full-time basis and apply his extensive experience to moving OLPC forward."
