Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. (SCEI) announced today that the cumulative worldwide shipment of the Gran Turismo franchise available on PlayStation, PS2, and PS3 has exceeded 50 million units as of April 30, 2008.
Sony achieved this sales figure in 10 years and 4 months since the launch of the first title in the franchise - Gran Turismo, in December 1997.
If you compare that to the 6 million copies GTA IV sold in just one week these Gran Turismo sales numbers look a bit weak. Of course these two games are very different and we should not compare them. Still GTA set a new level of what it means to have a sales record in the video game market.
Sony could still impress everyone with Gran Turismo when they launch the full new version next year. Right now the Gran Turismo Prologue for Sony PS3 is on sale.
