Samsung has announced that it has developed the world’s first Blue Phase technology that allows it to achieve a 240Hz driving speed for high-speed video. The Blue Phase LCD panel will provides viewers with more natural on screen motion.
Samsung says that it will unveil its first panel sized at 15-inches at the SID 2008 International Symposium later this month in LA. The design of the Blue Phase panel is called extremely cost efficient and Samsung says that the Blue Phase panels don’t require liquid crystal alignment layers like today’s most widely used LCD modes.
Samsung also says that the Blue Phase panels will resist bruising, which occurs when pressure on the screen causes an area of impaired brightness compared to the majority of the screen. LCD TVs driven at 120Hz currently use overdrive circuits and the Blue Phase panels will not need this type of technology to get its 240Hz refresh rate. Mass production of Blue Phase panels is expected to begin in 2011.
