Hitachi announced a pair of new hard drives today aimed at DVR and home theater use. The drives include the CinemaStar C5K320 and the CinemaStar 5K500. The C5K320 is a 2.5-inch drive available in capacities up to 320GB spinning at 5400 RPM.
The C5K320 uses Hitachi SmoothStream technology for smoother video streaming. Other features include time-limit error recovery and enhanced thermal monitoring. The CinemaStar 5K500 is the first CoolSpin drive from Hitachi and uses an enhanced motor to limit peak current during spin-up and lower continuous power.
The 5K500 drive will allow system builders to develop set-top boxes and DVRs running cooler and with less power needs. The drive needs 3.2 watts at idle, 2.7 watts at low idle and uses 2 platters. The C5K320 needs only 1.8 watts for read/write operations and 1.7 watts at idle. Both drives will be shipping in June.
