NVIDIA launched a new line of mobile CPUs (computer-on-chip) aimed at highly portable mobile devices like UMPS computers and smartphones. The line is called Tegra and includes two new mobile processor families. The Tegra 600 series is smaller than a dime according to NVIDIA yet can still support full 1080p HD video playback.

The 600 series is ultra-low-power and can still support smooth 3D interfaces. The integrated media processor is good for over 100 hours of audio and 10 hours of HD video playback. The image processor includes advanced DSC and HD camcorder processing. Other features include connectivity and support for Web 2.0 applications and display support for up to 1080p with HDMI, WSXGA+ LCD, SXGA CRT and NTSC/PAL TV-out.

Smartphones and more can make use of the TEGRA APX processor. The APX is designed for Windows based mobile smartphones, portable navigation devices and PMPs. The APX offers 720p HD video capture and playback, lowest power demands for 720p video, 3D user interfaces, premium HD video playback with NVIDIA PureVideo technology and ability to access intense online applications like mapping and games. NVIDIA says that the first Tegra based devices will be shipping in late 2008.
