Google updated the Google Trends service allowing now see numbers on the graph download to a spreadsheet.
This new feature enables you to compare popularity of search terms over time in numbers.
Google shows this new Google Trends feature on the popularity of vanilla and chocolate ice cream over time. You can see then that vanilla for instance had a spike in mid-2006.
In a more I4U related example I plotted iPod versus iPhone. It is interesting to see that the popularity of them is now in 2008 almost equal.
Another example is Windows versus Linux. Popularity for both is on the downturn with Windows still 3x more popular than Linux.
