As the iPhone 3G launch day draws closer it becomes clearer how AT&T will handle activation.
As reported activation of the iPhone 3G has to be done in stores. Earlier reports indicated you would have 30 days time to activate your new iPhone 3G. AT&T would have sanctions in place if you went beyond 30 days. I wondered how AT&T would go after people.
Now AT&T has confirmed to MacWorld that you have to activate right away in the store when you buy the iPhone 3G.
For most people that is what they want anyway. Only those who plan on using the iPhone 3G on other networks once somebody figures out how to unlock the iPhone 3G are forced to make a contract with AT&T.
In Germany T-Mobile seems to be handling it differently has you can order the iPhone 3G online. It is not clear yet how they will handle activation.
