The WSJ reports that National Semiconductor will introduce a device today dubbed SolarMagic that can help reduce the impact of partial shading on solar cells.
SolarMagic is able to recoup as much as 40% of the power that otherwise would be lost according to a field test at REgrid Power Inc.
The problem with partial shading is that it brings the voltage of whole cell arrays below a voltage threshold that the inverters require. Supposedly the SolarMagic device somehow compensates for the voltage variations.
National is keeping the technical details under cover so far.
