Report Says In-Flight Broadband Markets Worth over $1B in 2012

Posted on Tue, 8 Jul 2008 07:14:00 CDT | by Shane McGlaunAccording to Research and Markets the in–flight broadband industry will grow to be worth over $1 billion by 2012. The report also says that many airlines are getting ready to re-launch their own in-flight broadband services after the failure of Boeing’s Connexion service.
Two core areas of focus are surfacing according to Research and Markets; bandwidth and technology choice. Competitors in the market are providing two basic choices including lower cost systems and more expensive systems that are future proof.
The fear is that with fuel costs rising rapidly the money available for airlines to install broadband services in their aircraft may dwindle to the point the in-flight broadband can’t be implemented. Other than broadband Internet access the report also looks at direct broadcast video in-flight.
