Electric Mini to come from BMW?

Automotive News reports that BMW is planning to build 500 Mini Coopers with Electric Motors for California.
The electric Mini cars would be built at the Mini factory in Oxford, England without engines, gearboxes and fuel tanks and then shipped to Munich, Germany, where they are being fitted with electric powertrains.
490 electric Minis would be available to customers. There is no timeframe given for the delivery of the Electric BMW mini cars. There is also no official word from BMW about electric cars at all.
