According to Strategy Analytics Apple will grab 35% of the touchscreen phone market in 2008 with its iPhone. Many users that would have bought the original iPhone held off because the iPhone lacked 3G connectivity.
The 3G connectivity for the iPhone 3G is the biggest single improvement many were waiting for. The addition of GPS is also expected to boost sales. Despite those two new added features, many will find that AT&T’s 3G service is patchy at best outside of major cities on highways. Before you plunk down the cash you should check that 3G coverage in your area is sufficient.
Bonny Joy, Analyst at Strategy Analytics, said, "We estimate the Apple iPhone will account for 6.3 million of the 18.1 million touchscreen phones sold in the United States during January to December 2008, for an impressive 35 percent market share. We expect the release of the heavily-subsidized 3G iPhone 2.0 on July 11th to catalyze a healthy spurt in touchscreen volumes during the second half of the year."
