According to Gartner the worldwide PC market grew by 16% in Q2 2008 despite the slow economy in the US. The 16% growth is compared to the level the market was at in Q2 2007. HP continues to hold the top spot in the worldwide PC makers list with 18.1% of the global market.

Dell sits in the number 2 spot with an increase in PC shipments of 21.9% for the quarter and a global market share of 15.6%. The third place spot went to Acer with a 9.4% market share. Lenovo holds spot 4 on the list with a 7.8% market share and Toshiba has spot 5 with 4.4% of the global market.

"Mobile PCs continued to lead unit growth across all regions as the average selling price (ASP) of mobile PCs declined sharply relative to desk-based PC ASPs," said Mika Kitagawa, principal analyst for Gartner's Client Computing Markets group. "Economic uncertainties have hit PC revenues, resulting in steep ASP declines, especially in markets such as the United States and the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region. The industry could ultimately see a significant wave of consolidation if stronger vendors continue to press their pricing advantage."
