On Thursday we reported that 1% of Apple MobileMe users have been without email service since July 18th. It's now ten days later and the issue is still not completely resolved.
On Friday Steve Jobs got on to the matter and the MobileMe staff is now posting status updates on the Apple MobileMe site.
Sunday evening a new MobileMe status update was published. Web access to email service has been established to the affected 1% of MobileMe users. 40% of these users can also again get access to email via Mac, PC, and iPhone.
Apple acknowledges that emails between 18th and 22nd of July may have been lost. The first post indicated that 10% of emails received between 16th and 18th have been lost. Since July 23rd the emails received between 18th and 22nd of July have been collected on a different server. It is not clear to me if emails are really lost or only lost the date information as they got collected on a different server.
I guess if you are affected you just have to try to see what emails are still there.
More details on the MobileMe Status page.
This is starting to be one of the most high profile outages of a paid online service. Apple will have to explain sometime, why they needed over 10 days to resolve this issue. To me it looks like Apple launched MobileMe prematurely without a proper backup strategy in place.
For Apple it would be a good idea to offer MobileMe for free for 1 year to gain time to work with early adopters and "friends of Apple" to make MobileMe a trusted service.
