Hitachi announced two new hard drives today aimed at storing digital video in DVRs. Both new drives are in the CinemaStar series. The CinemaStar 7K1000.B is available in several different capacities up to 1TB. The CinemaStar 5K320 is available with up to 320GB of storage and uses Hitachi CoolSpin technology.
CoolSpin drives use technology that optimizes drive speed for low power and low acoustics. This helps the drive be quieter and more energy efficient. Both drives are optimized for use 24/7 and have silent-seek acoustics for nearly inaudible operation.
Hitachi says the 1TB CinemaStar can store up to 247 hours of MPEG-4 HD video and supports more than ten simultaneous data streams. The CinemaStar 7K1000.B will begin shipping in August and the CinemaStar 5K320 will ship in September. Pricing is unknown.
