Formation has announced that it doubled the size of its rugged ToughDisk 3500 SATA hard disk. The capacity for the drive went from 320GB to 640GB. The rugged ToughDrive is made to bridge the gap between SSDs and the normal HDD in a 3.5-inch form factor.
The drive is designed to be a drop-in replacement for a normal 3.5-inch HDD and is both vibration and shock hardened. The drive uses the SATA 3GB/s interface and has a USB 2.0 port for access with systems lacking SATA. The drive also supports eSATA and xSATA as well.
"Our military and commercial customers expressed a need for greater storage capacity while containing costs and we responded by doubling the storage of our TD3500 SATA product," said Gene Lovely, director of business development for Formation. "The TD3500 SATA has become our top-selling ToughDisk product because of its growing acceptance as a lower-cost alternative to solid state storage."
