Qimonda AG announced that it has started shipping XDR DRAM in volume for the Sony PS3 game console. The first 512MB samples started to ship in January 2008. The memory operates at 3.2Gbps, has 6.4GB/s of peak memory bandwidth and provides 12.8GB/s of bandwidth per device.
Qimonda says that the XDR DRAM will allow designers to provide an order of magnitude higher performance than possible by today's standards. The designers can also get more performance with fewer memory devices.
"We are very proud to have started the volume production of our XDR product for PS3. This is a further milestone reflecting our product diversification strategy and demonstrating our leading position in the specialty memory market," said Robert Feurle, Vice President Business Unit Specialty DRAM of Qimonda AG. "We are prepared to support all our customers with XDR DRAM in various applications."
