As reported the CERN is trying to switch on the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) today and tries to begin circulating the first beams in the 27km long machine.
British newspapers are apparently already catering to the fears of some that the world ends in a tiny Black Hole generated by the LHC.
The first collisions that could lead to tiny Black Holes are actually still weeks out. The BBC News has published a great article on what the LHC is and why it is cool.

Despite the Web being born at CERN, it did not seem to stay home to grow up. The CERN and LHC web sites have a design from the early web days. They really should take some of the money to present themselves properly to the public, especially if the interest is that high, like it is for the Black Hole Maker. Just take NASA as glowing example on how to present scientific information on the web in a state of the art way.
