A future version of the Wi-Fi standard called 802.11v will bring with it new power saving features that are intended to add a green aspect to wireless LANs. Work on the 802.11v standard began in 2004 and is expected to be complete in 2010. Features will include a Wireless Network Management Sleep Mode that will allow for longer power-off times for 802.11 radios.

Wake on WLAN capabilities will be added to allow managers to wake wireless computers and other appliances. A Proxy ARP will allow an access point to respond to ARP requests. The standard will include several more power saving features.

The new protocol will also offer new location features that offer RFID and emergency services greater accuracy. Gast says, "Developing a certification program to enable the widespread adoption of large-scale management features will strengthen Wi-Fi's presence in the enterprise, as well as potentially enable new business models for service providers."
