Sigma Designs has announced that its new SMP8644 media processor system-on-chip is available. The media processor is designed for content-rich devices like IPTV boxes, cable boxes, and Blu-ray players. Features of the processor include content security, multiple on-chip CPUs, on-chip system peripherals, and a wide range of external interfaces.

Sigma says that the series of on-chip processors greatly increase performance. Multiple advanced decoder engines are built-in including H.264, WMV9, VC-1, and MPEG-4 along with AVS. The processor also accelerates graphics, multi-standard audio, and DTS-HD MA 7.1 surround. HDMI 1.3 output is supported as well.

“Sigma is a leader in high definition media processors, which are widely used in the IPTV set-top box and Blu-ray player markets,” said Ken Lowe, vice president of strategic marketing at Sigma Designs. “We see a great deal of opportunity in providing a high-end solution in several of our market segments.
