NXP has unveiled the world's first smart key prototype developed in conjunction with BMW. The multifunction car key would allow drivers to start their car as you do with any other key and then adds to the key a semiconductor that allows contactless payments to be made.
The key would feature advanced functionality that allows for public transportation e-ticketing and more. The key would also allow for personalized in-car access to personal data and in-vehicle online services. It would be kind of cool if you could order and pay for lunch at a drive thru from the car.
“With the concept of integrating contactless payment functionality in a car key, we are working on the combination of automotive technology and lifestyle,” said Prof. Raymond Freymann, managing director of BMW Group Research and Technology. “In cooperation with NXP we are doing research in enhancing the capabilities of the car key into one smart device for access, payment, and services that will simplify the lives of BMW car drivers in future. It will help us to stay in touch with our drivers directly and deliver a complete range of mobility-enhancing services.”
