Jon Peddie Research released its latest facts on the GPU industry today. JPR says that in Q3 2008 over 111 million GPUs were shipped. During the same quarter of 2007 91 million GPUs shipped and in Q2 2008 94 million GPUs shipped.
In desktop GPUs Intel slid to 32.6% of the market while Intel maintained its top spot with 43.9% of the market, AMD climbed to 20.3% of the market and overall desktop GPUs grew 4.7%. In notebook, GPUs Intel held the top spot with 56.2% of the market, NVIDIA dropped to 32.6%, and AMD climbed to 20.3% of the market.
"The third quarter is seasonally up as OEMs place orders for chips to build inventory for the holiday season. However, this quarter was up more than any other for some time, and in spite of suggestions of a recession that started last Q4," said Dr. Jon Peddie, president of Jon Peddie Research in Tiburon, California. "Desktops increased seasonally and notebooks enjoyed quite significant gains."
