Blizzard Entertainment announced today that its World of Warcraft title has passed the 11 million subscriber mark worldwide. Blizzard says that the milestone was reached just as the beta for the second expansion pack called Wrath of the Lich King is set to launch on November 13th.
WoW debuted in November of 2004 and is the most popular MMORPG around the world as well as the best selling PC game of 2005 and 2006. The original game finished in second behind its first expansion pack Burning Crusade in 2007. Burning Crusade holds the record for fastest selling PC game of all time with 2.4 million copies sold in the first 24 hours.
“It’s been very rewarding to see gamers around the world continue to show such strong support for World of Warcraft,” said Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment®. “We remain fully committed to responding to that enthusiasm with a high-quality, constantly evolving game experience.”
