Microsoft announced the release of a free security software suite in 2009 codenamed Morro to address the growing need for a PC security solution tailored to the demands of emerging markets, smaller PC form factors and rapid increases in the incidence of malware.
Morro will be available in the second half of 2009 and will provide comprehensive protection from malware including viruses, spyware, rootkits, and trojans.
As part of Microsoft’s move to focus on this simplified offering, the company also announced today that it will discontinue retail sales of its Windows Live OneCare subscription service effective June 30, 2009. More details in this MS announcement.
This is a great move by Microsoft to offer complete security protection for free. After all it is their vulnerable OS that allows hackers and bad people to mess with our computers.
After Microsoft is done protecting our Windows computers, how about finally solving email Spam with a new electronic messaging infrastructure? On the other hand I was actually surprised that the shutdown of one ISP in the Silicon Valley was able to cut global Spam by 65% last week. It is actually crazy that it took so long to find this source of Spam. More details about that story can be found on the Washington Post.
