A new wireless USB kit has launched in Japan that provides laptop users with a PCMCIA slot the capability to deploy wireless USB in the home or office. The kit includes the WUSB OC card with an external antenna and a wireless four port USB hub.

The kit is called the Certified Wireless USB Kit REX-WUSB1. Software based setup will sync the CardBus PC card to the wireless hub and allow for printing, backup and access to other USB gear without wires. Both USB 2.0 and 1.0 speeds are supported and the device uses the Realtek RTU7010 UWB chip in the PC card and NEC PD720180 and Realtek RTU7010 UWB chip in the hub.

Data rates are promised to be up to 480Mbps and the kit supports Windows XP and Vista only. The kit is only available in Japan at 31.500 Yen. I had hoped Wireless USB would be more prevalent now and integrated into more devices. I would love to shed the wires running around my office.
