If you were one of the many who was all excited about the prospects of an iPhone at Walmart for only $99, you are out of luck. It has been confirmed that Walmart is getting the iPhone 3G, but at a discount of a measly $2 over other providers.
Trust me when I say saving $2 by buying something as technical as the iPhone from Walmart is not a good idea. I watched a Walmart phone sales person struggle to explain a basic Nokia handset just last week to a lady. I shudder to think what would have happened with a more complex device like the iPhone.
Still, I have no doubt that offering the iPhone in the massive retailer will help iPhone sales; I am convinced this is what helped Acer's Aspire one netbook grab the top spot on the netbook sales charts. With a Jobs-less MacWorld keynote this year perhaps all we can hope for is a new 32GB iPhone 3G, which would result in the 8Gb iPhone 3G dropping to $99.
