Japan gets the first hybrid Blu-ray DVD disc release in February with the Code Blue Box set. The three layer disc can be read by existing Blu-ray players and DVD players.
The Blu-ray player is using the blue laser with wave length of 405nm and the DVD player uses the 650nm red laser to read the disc without interference.
Currently the technology is limited to singly layer Blu-ray discs.
If Blu-ray succeeds such hybrid discs are actually not really necessary. We will all have Blu-ray players instead of DVD players some time or Blu-ray dies because of broadband video delivery. In this case we also do not need a BD-DVD disc.
